Windows Update won’t download or install on Windows 10/11? Before you lose hours, follow these quick, reversible fixes. They work on genuine systems: if you need a licence, Licensgo offers the Windows 11 Pro licence with instant delivery and assistance.
1Step 1 — Quick checks: network, space, time, troubleshooter
Start with the basics: is the PC online (open a couple of sites), any VPN disabled, and do you have at least 8–10 GB free? If space is tight, see our guide to free up disk space.
Check date/time and region. An incorrect clock breaks secure connections. If needed, follow our tips to sync the time.
Then run the built-in troubleshooter: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > “Run”.
- Restart PC and router;
- Temporarily unplug USB drives and SD cards;
- Verify that Windows is activated with a genuine licence.
Create a restore point and save important files. Need a plan? See our guide to practical backups.
2Step 2 — Restart Windows Update services (wuauserv/BITS)
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: net stop wuauserv && net stop bits, then net start wuauserv && net start bits. Try Windows Update again.
You can restart the same services from “Services” (services.msc) if you prefer the graphical interface.
3Step 3 — Clear the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 caches
Stop services: net stop wuauserv && net stop bits && net stop cryptsvc. Delete the contents of C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution\\Download. Rename C:\\Windows\\System32\\catroot2 to catroot2.old. Restart the services.
Remove contents only, not the folders themselves. Windows will rebuild clean indexes at the next check.
4Step 4 — Repair system files with SFC and DISM
Run SFC first: sfc \/scannow. If issues remain, run DISM: DISM \/Online \/Cleanup-Image \/RestoreHealth, then restart and try Windows Update again.
Low free space can make SFC/DISM fail. If needed, follow our guide to free up disk space before retrying.
In PowerShell (Admin): sfc \/scannow; if OK, restart; otherwise run DISM and restart.
5Step 5 — Remove blockers: drivers, VPN and antivirus
Update or roll back critical drivers (storage, network, graphics). Temporarily disconnect VPN and third‑party firewalls. If your antivirus is aggressive, pause real-time scanning for a few minutes during installation, then re-enable it. A light, reliable option is ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
Don’t browse or download with protection disabled. Re-enable your antivirus as soon as the update finishes.
6Step 6 — Install the update offline
Find the exact KB number from Windows Update history and download the standalone package from the Microsoft Update Catalog, then install it offline. For feature updates use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
On older PCs, staying on Windows 10 is fine. If you need to regularise your device, Licensgo offers the Windows 10 Pro licence with invoice and support.
Prefer official Microsoft packages and assistants to avoid tampered downloads.
7Step 7 — Full reset of Windows Update components + error codes
As Administrator, run: net stop bits && net stop wuauserv && net stop appidsvc && net stop cryptsvc; rename C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution to .old and C:\\Windows\\System32\\catroot2 to .old; netsh winsock reset; netsh winhttp reset proxy; net start cryptsvc && net start appidsvc && net start wuauserv && net start bits; restart and try again.
Common Windows Update error codes and the quickest fix:
- 0x800f081f — missing component store files: run DISM \/RestoreHealth, then SFC;
- 0x80070002 — missing/corrupted temp files: clear SoftwareDistribution and catroot2, then retry;
- 0x8024a105 — update component glitch: restart services and use the troubleshooter;
- 0x800f0922 — full reserved partition/VPN: disable VPN, free up/extend the reserved partition;
- 0x80072ee2 — timeout/proxy: check network, firewall and proxy; try again later;
- 0x800705b4 — timeout: run the troubleshooter and reset BITS/Windows Update;
- 0xC1900101 — driver conflict: update/uninstall drivers, unplug peripherals, ensure free space.
If nothing works, perform an in‑place repair with the latest ISO to keep apps and data. Make sure you have a genuine Windows 11 Pro licence.
